The first people I lived with in London
were from Beijing.
When speaking our mother tongues
we couldn’t understand each other.
We only communicated
through English.
Out of this lack of communication
I asked them to tell me a secret in Mandarin
while I told each of them a secret in Spanish.
The secrets were taped and transcripted by each of us out of the sounds we could hear but could not understand.
Finally, each transcription was “translated” by Google Translate to english, the common tongue spoke in our house.
The videos in Keep the Secret (2019)
are a deconstruction of language.
They destroy meaning through a series of mistranslations;
what once were logical, coherent and personal thoughts
become nonsensical texts for everyone to see and get lost into.
The work uses the feeling of not understanding,
combines it with transcription and translation processes
and plays with an official language
until it ends up being only the facade of one.
Las primeras personas con las que compartí casa en Londres

No podíamos entendernos
al hablar en nuestra lengua materna.
Solo nos comunicábamos
hablando inglés.
A partir de esta falta de comunicación
les pedí que me contaran un secreto en Mandarín,
mientras que yo les conté un secreto en Español.
Los secretos fue grabados y a partir de este audio, cada una hizo una transcripción a partir de los sonidos que escuchábamos pero no entendíamos.
Por último, cada transcripción fue “traducida” por Google Translate a inglés, el idioma en común que hablábamos en casa.

transcripciones y traducciones fallidas;
lo que una vez fueron pensamientos
personales y coherentes se transforman en textos sin sentido,
a la vista de todos.
En este proyecto,
aprovecho el sentimiento de no entender,
lo combino con procesos de transcripción y traducción,
al tiempo que juego con idiomas reconocidos
hasta el punto en el que todo termina
siendo tan solo la fachada de un lenguaje.
