I used to follow foxes
around Deptford,
South East London.
I used to take their photos
with a point-and-shoot film
camera.
One would lead me to another and to another
until I felt disoriented and lost among houses
and streets that I recognised by day
but were the foxes’ territory by night.
The Hunt (2019) is a documentation of those nights.
By night, the streets, parks,
and rubbish bins become their territory.
Private property doesn't exist; they sneak into backyards
and disappear behind cars;
the landscape is no longer inhabited by humans.
The photographs are blurry,
out of focus,
noisy.
They are not a set-up of an ideal,
not a traditional portrait of wildlife,
not a pristine landscape.
They show society's relationship with nature in a context where wildlife is decreasing, and species
appear to be trespassing in the urban environment,
making them pests rather than cute pets.
This series was made into a limited edition zine.
